I'm afraid the club are in part responsible for the number of call offs. Not the current Board but previous Boards. The club relaid the pitch in 1988 with field drains installed- silt traps were located at the touch line ( covered with 2x2 slabs) the traps have to be emptied to stop the drains clogging up- Jimmy Lawson used to do it. Now you don't even see the slabs at the edge of the pitch because the drains will be so full now you wouldn't be able to see the brick chambers. Bucky, you seem to know a fair bit about it. Why not lend your knowledge and speak to the guys at the club who are dealing with the pitch maintenance and make sure they know about it. Previous people who knew may not have passed it on.

I doubt if any pitch could have stood up to that deluge. It absolutely takes the buiscuit to read people slagging off the club: unbelievable. You would think the Rovers staff did it deliberately: rain dances 'n' that. The only other games in the area to go ahead were Airdrie (artificial pitch) and Clyde (artificial pitch). What is the poimt of this constant slagging of the club? I really don't get it.

Paul, my knowledge is limited to the time when these works were carried out although would happily help the club out. I'm not being funny but there would be more info regarding it in the memorabilia that Robin Marwick left behind.
Unfortunately my feeling is that any remedial works to the drains would be very disruptive to the playing pitch never mind costs

Message to the board. Pick up yellow pages. Look up UIS or Enviroclean. Pick up phone and call. £500 for a half days squad / high pressure jetter vactor hire - sorted for years!

Bucky if pipes / wavencoil are in place could certainly get working to some degree without digging pitch. Ultimately would be better if dug up and filter material replaced.

Now we're talking- a vactor for Victor. Only question is - is the good will at the current Board jet pressured. I get the feeling it's running on empty.

The question should be how is it a pitch that has in the main coped with both heavy and prolonged rain can no longer drain anymore

Agree bucky. Smacks of lack of maintenance. Can be difficult though if records of where the drainage is haven't been passed on. If a decent drainage contractor is brought in they can find one silt trap or outlet and work from there.

When the pitch was relaid and drains installed in 1988 it was under the direction of Robin Marwick so I'm pretty sure a record would have been kept although I'm not sure if the detail would help us now.
Since the drains were installed we have had two Boards of Directors who wanted to move the club from Cliftonhill- maybe it suited then not to maintain the drains. Just saying.

The important thing, Bucky, is that the current Board (like the previous one under John Devlin) is 100% committed to staying at and improving Cliftonhill. No easy task. A huge amount of work has already been carried out by the current regime just to keep the ground open.
Postponements are a huge disappointment to all concerned - not least the small team of volunteers who give up their free time to get Cliftonhill ready for matchdays. I'm sure the club would very much welcome any extra help/suggestions re: pitch maintenance, drainage etc we fans can provide. We all want what's best for Rovers, so let's get this sorted together.

Absolutely Bill, I have sent a message to Michael MacKinnon to see if Robin kept a record of the pitch laying and drainage works . It's a complete long shot- as K70 said finding the silt traps is a bit of needles in haystacks unless you get Tony Robinson and the Time Team in.
The current Board should be congratulated on their efforts to keep the old girl going, however they have been pushing their on again off again romance with plastic surfaces which I can see the advantages off but worry about the financial burden on the club to renew after 7-8 years.

Hopeless. No doubt everybody's heart will be ruling their heads here as we all wanted the game on. Frustration will inevitably kick in. First game on Scottish fixture card off again!!!! More Saturday revenue lost. Your no telling me cliftonhill is any different to surfaces at East Stirling, Cowdenbeath, Brechin etc etc. So disappointing. Ok I'm going to be the one that said it, Brechin had to spend alot of money a few years ago to sort out their drainage, Cowdenbeath we saw the state of a couple of weeks ago. And the best thing about your post that gave me a real big chuckle EAST STIRLINGSHIRE GROUNDSHATE WITH STENHOUSEMUIR, IE ARTIFICIAL SURFACE. Very different to our surface I would imagine. Lol Please think before you speak.

Haha morning Chris, so brechin spent a few quid - maybe we should consider a bit of investment also to give groundstaff a fighting chance. Cowdenbeath, in all its mess, still get the games on. I perhaps opted for a bad example in East Stirling in my moment of rant, I stand corrected, however, glad to hear it gave you a chuckle nonetheless.

What a great shame considering there magical pitch ability and drainage expertise and know doubt there incredible ability to frighten the rain away could be bothered to come down and give you hand. The rain that fell in our area in the 36 hours before the game was the worst in Scotland, hence why our game was off. Thanks again Michael if the guys on this forum had an inch of your commitment to the club it would be a far better place.
