Bunch of wimps that Ayr mob: in 1978 Rovers played Berwick away on the Saturday (3-3) and then took on Morton on the Sunday in the cup (0-1 in front of 3,500). No problem!!

Good memory ! I remember those games, despite being on the losing side on the Sunday the most outstanding player on the field was Rovers Tommy Sermanni

Rovers were leading 2-1 at Firhill. 2 Ian Campbell goals smacked past Alan Rough!! Rovers were very unlucky in that tie. In the return leg a Ray Franchetti shit smacked off the post leaving Rough rooted in the first half.

At least with it hitting the post Rough didn't have to get his gloves dirty lol!

I was right behind the goal when that shot hit the post. Bertie Auld was going mental all afternoon: entire match dominated by Rovers; and Franchetti missed a sitter in the second half: oh no!

That Thistle Cup Tie was brilliant despite getting beaten 0-1.Big crowd and If I listen carefully I can still hear that old wooden post reverberate after Franchetti smacked it.
I was ball boy that day in the heady days when ball boys actually returned the ball to the field of play instead of standing about daydreaming and texting their pals.
if I'm not mistaken we wore our Man Utd away white Admiral strip with the vertical black lines down it that had a cloth ARFC badge crudely sewn over the MUFC one.
I also bought an ARFC rosette outside the ground that day.
Was also behind the goal on ball boy duty in the aforementioned 9-8 penalty defeat to Shire when Shawhead's finest AKA Gerry Loughlin smacked Rovers 9th off the post.
Also at the Morton 0-1 reverse. There was some cracking players at Rovers in those days. A pity we always under performed in the league.

I was also at the Scottish Cup tie versus Thistle in 1976 when there was over 4000 there and Rovers were unlucky to lose 2-1 after being 1-0 up at half time. I was behind the goal at the Coatbridge end when Donny McLean thumped the ball high over Alan Rough. Partick were running away with the first division that year and had Alan Hansen in defence. We were always a good cup side in the seventies and had a great crop of players - but always came up short in the league.

The rumour has it that Tam Fagan never fancied promotion as it would cost too much going into the Division 1, so the team were told to calm down if they ever got too close to promotion. In 1979 we finished 4th only 6 points behind Champions Falkirk.
