In this the centenary year of the Rovers' only appearance in the Scottish Cup final( so far) it is interesting to note that this year's competition started yesterday with the first preliminary round taking place. Yes the Scottish Cup has started and it's hardly the middle of August! I welcome the expansion of the competition over the last few years to include teams representing communities across the country.
Some of the teams who march on from yesterday are: Banks of Dee, Broxburn, Camelon, Jeanfield Swifts, Colville Park, Whitehill, Dundonald, Auchinleck, Penicuick, Threave Rovers, Hill of Beath, Linlithgow, Lochee, Girvan, Lothian Thistle and Wigtown
Those who fell by the way and have to wait to next year to dream of a cup run again are: Glasgow University, Tynecastle, Newton Stewart, Coldstream, Easthouses, Hawick, Blackburn, Preston Athletic, Burntisland Shipyard and St Cuthbert's Wanderers.
You can see a trend here with the traditional non-league teams being squeezed out by the former Junior teams.
Anyway it's still 2 months until the Rovers enter at the second round. It will be interesting to see which of the teams above are still in the cup. A good cup run this year would be a great way for us to celebrate the centenary of our appearance at Hampden.

Girvan away, Wick away....do you feel a a song coming on?
Girvan good chip shop, have always wanted to go to Wick, been in the airport a few times.
For me, my preferred away would be Buckie, still feel annoyed about that McCabe late winner at Cliftonhill when an exotic away Saturday Cup tie seemed to be beckoning.

That was an amazing cup tie (1978, I think). I've never seen a team get so battered as Buckie Thistle did by us that day, yet still hold out (until the last minute). Just about the only thing Jim McCabe ever did in his short spell with us before he decided to spend more time with the bottle.

The Buckie Thistle match had a crowd of 889. Winner in the 89 1/2 minute. McCabe's header was from about one yard; Cliftonhill erupted, as the papers of the time used to put it.

Indeed, sad, I went with the late Rovers Director Patrick Reilly one Sunday morning to his house in Greenend to sign Jim. Pat offered him a way back into football after his spell at Stranraer. A great, unfulfilled talent.

I remember Gala Fairydean who came to Cliftonhill in December 1985 and fancied their chances as we were rank rotten in the league at that stage ( last year as comparison ! ) - we triumphed 8-1 with Victor Kasule running the show !

Remember the Buckie game one of my earliest memories of Rovers. I asked my Dad for 50p to buy a pie and instead bought an enamel badge from the Club shop when it was situated behind Albion Street.
Also remember Rovers beating Clachnacuddin in the cup 2-1 with a late winner in 1982 to be drawn against Rangers at Ibrox
