We played a Chinese team at Cliftonhill. I forget their name, they were on tour in Scotland in preparation for them featuring in the Chinese cup final. If I remember correctly Rovers won, 2-0?? As for the year I’d guess late 1990’s or very early 2000’s which fits.
Their manager or perhaps just the organiser of their tour was an English ex Rangers player whose name escapes me!

there was an ex-referee on off the ball on bbc radio scotland last month talking about the game, but i don't recall it and can't see anything online. surely the chinese national team coming over for a game would have made some news.

Heard the chat on Off the Ball, and meant to raise the issue on here.
Think the ref (what was his name) said that the China team was on its way to an international tournament. Think he said youth tournament, David/Roy were they a young looking side?
Think that there is a rule that league sides can not play a national side, so China will have played under another name to get by that.
Rovers played Cyprus midweek when their national team came over to play Scotland on the Saturday, again the team had a club type name, to get by that rule. Boys from the Brig, page 288. Rovers won 2-0.
Maybe, we should play national sides more often.

Picking my brain even more I remembered that the ex Rangers English player was Paul Rideout and he was actually playing for the Chinese team.
I see that he played for Chongqing Dangdai Lifan F.C. in 1999 and Shenzhen F.C the following year when he was around 35/36. I don’t remember him being much older than the other players but I don’t remember much.
I remember that the person organising the tour was in fact Stephen McAnespie or his Dad Alex.

So it was as far back as 1996-ish?
I can’t find anything online which is surprising.
And when did the Cyprus thing happen?
Were these both national teams playing as “clubs” to beat the regulations?

I think the Cypriot game was in the 1960’s - before my time!

I'm sure the game Anathorsis Famagusta was 1968 a few days before Cyprus lost 8 nil to Scotland at Hampden.

Season 1968-69, Scotland 8-0 Cyprus, Saturday, May 17, 1969, World Cup Qualifier, Rovers played Anothosis Famagusta, officially, in the midweek leading up to that Saturday. Nothing in the book regards the floodlights.

So it was Cyprus warming up for the Scotland game, but pretending to be a club side to get around the rules?
That’s pretty interesting stuff. Wish I could find out more.

Rovers played Quandoa Huanwei in 1997 (or maybe they got the name wrong...see * below). The Rovers v Queen's Park match programme dated 25 October 1997 has a match report. It doesn't give the date - only says the match took place 'last week' - but we had played East Stirling at home on 18 Oct, so maybe the match took place on Sunday, 19 Oct 1997? Anyway, here is an edited version of the report:
'Albion Rovers 5 Quandoa Huanwei 3
In a match played in ever-deteriorating conditions, Rovers surged forward from the start and the only surprise was that it took 22 minutes to open the scoring when Sandy Ross lashed an unstoppable shot high into the net. For all their pressure, Rovers were unable to add to their tally before the interval.
5 mins into the 2nd period, Vinnie Moore's 20 yarder struck the inside of the post and trundled in for no.2. A few minutes later, Rovers had a shock when Zeng Qing Gao raced in from the left to beat Steve Ross with a raging drive, and in the 64th minute the same player sped through the middle to score an excellent equaliser. Stunned Rovers hit back within seconds [of the re-start] as Chris Sinclair thumped home a beauty and the 2 goal advantage was restored in 71 minutes through Sandy Ross. Sub Ian Harty chipped the keeper to score a fine 5th in 85 minutes but Quandoa had the last word through Paul Rideout, who headed in from a corner 4 minutes from the end.'
The Rovers team is listed (the visitors' line-up is not): Steve Ross, Mitchell, Sinclair, Coyle, McKilligan, Melvin, Dickson, Moore, Sandy Ross, Gardner, Bruce. Subs: Watters, Greenock, McIlhatton, Ian Harty, Martin Harty
* I can't find any references to Quandoa Huanwei on Google - Wiki states that Paul Rideout played for Qianwei Huandao, so maybe that's who Rovers played and the programme editor didn't check their name carefully enough?
There is a Qinggao Zeng, born in 1969, who is currently listed as assistant manager of League One (2nd tier) side Shaanxi Chang'an Athletic. So, if it's the same player, he would have been 28 when he played at Cliftonhill.
