If you take a normal season and compare it to this year , we are only at early April in comparison. Three and half months from the first league match. I believe there is to be a vote soon with League One and Two teams voting whether to start their leagues on 17 October , with an option of taking part in the Betfred Cup sections from 1 October.
Only if that goes through and when we know if we will be playing in front of paying customers should we start to sign or re-sign players. There is plenty of time and there will be plenty of players around.
Being proactive as Paul puts it would be foolhardy in these circumstances. Jordan bemoans the loss of 4 good players and it is always disappointing to see good players leave but it is simple business economics, where we would have made an offer in line with the manager's valuation of the player and what the club can afford. If the player gets a better offer and they are out of contract then they move on and good luck to them. That's just the way the game works.
Chris predicts that we will go down and says teams , including in our league, are signing players left, right and centre. I can't see a list for League 2 signings to date so if Chris could post the list, we could all see what our rivals are up to.
KJG suggests that to reduce the number of games to be squeezed in, the Betfred Cup should return to a knock out competition from round 1. This would be a financial disaster for clubs like the Rovers, costing us £30000 plus. The Betfred Cup has been one of the few successes in Scottish football over the last few seasons: it guarantees us £20000 minimum for participation plus 4 reasonable gate shares. A far cry from being knocked out in round one away to the likes of Brechin in early August with a share of a gate that would hardly cover the bus fare.
