The draw for the 2nd round of the Scottish Cup has just been made and Rovers will face Glasgow University away from home!
The match will be played the weekend of 22nd October, almost certainly Saturday 22nd itself!

I understand that they play such games at Airdrie's gaff, as they're away from home that Saturday it may well be on that date.

Winnable certainly but they did win 3-2 yesterday away to Forres who are 8th in the Highland League whereas Glasgow Uni are 8th in the 3rd tier of the West of Scotland League.

Memories of Rovers' 1-0 win at Anniesland in the 70s will no doubt come to some of our older followers. The winning goal, of course, came from Raymond Franchetti.

Is there not a story of people on this board being caught skipping school to attend that match, after the TV cameras focused on them?

Is there not a story of people on this board being caught skipping school to attend that match, after the TV cameras focused on them? I've heard this more than once, can't remember who it was tho'. Just looked it up and Rovers drew 1-1 with GU on Sat 10th January 1976 at Cliftonhill and won the replay 1-0 on Wed 14th January, the replay was held early in the afternoon presumably due to a lack of floodlights at the venue. Previously we humped them 5-1 on Sat 21st January 1928 at Cliftonhill.

Anybody else get the impression that the cameraman was a GU fan?

The winning goal, of course, came from Raymond Franchetti. Here he is - heading in that goal. www.heraldscotland.com/sport/14177907.hugh-macdonald-meets-glasgow-university-scottish-cup-titans-1976/And also a great article about the Uni players having a 40th anniversary dinner to celebrate the match. But for the article to say that the match (the replay) 'lies unremembered in Coatbridge' is nonsense. Those of us who dogged school to go to the match recall it in vivid detail. We were lucky to win the replay and did so because Jimmy Coughlin played despite being ill with a duodenal ulcer (he had missed the first match) apparently due to a personal plea made to him by Tom Fagan. Coughlin held a very shaky Rovers team together when they were under pressure and set up the winning goal for Franchetti.

There are three main things about that I remember about the replay.
The first was we took a bus in and paid our way in then the huge number of students, anything to avoid a lecturer, crashed the barriers and then poured in without paying.
The highlight was Ray scoring, running towards us and giving us the fingers, well, we had been giving him a bit of verbals.
Vinny Christie was asked to see his headmaster the next morning. He asked Vinny about the letter that was handed in to say he was ill. The head teacher had spotted Vinny on the edited highlights on STV.

STV filmed the match, brief highlights being shown on the telly that night. I was friendly with Jim Hossack one of STV`s film editors and later that year Jim, with a projectionist, came out to Coatbridge and we held a film night in The Georgian. The film (16mm)of the game lasted about 30 minutes. Jim also brought film of the England v Scotland match from 1967 (the famous 2 - 3 victory over the World Champions). After the showing in The Georgian, Jim gave me the film in its protective can as he believed STV would probably not keep it. I passed this with much more Rovers paraphenalia to Robin Marwick 30 years ago before we moved to Nottinghamshire. Sadly Jim Hossack passed away earlier this year from cancer but I got to speak with him at his son`s home several days before the end.

Man watching those highlights give me the absolute FEAR.
I don't think I can face another Scottish Cup humiliation.
You can tell from that footage they have some fast, skilful, players.
