Won 6-0 in a friendly last night. They don’t seem to play in a league, reserve players can’t be drafted into first team which begs the question what is the point? Would love to know how much this all costs the club and why it isn’t being invested in the first team budget.

It was a 6-0 defeat to Larkhall thistle who are the league above west park in their defence i was at the game and it was a very much changed side due to Sandy calling 5/6 players up for a bounce game in training also the reserve players can be drafted into the first team as shown by Cha Henderson Fraser Walker and Kai McMenemy being on the bench this season but its up to Sandy if they get minutes in the first team

I stand corrected. I have never fully understood the set up with reserves, strikes me as a bit strange how a young player can be judged on stepping upto the first team purely on a series of friendlies and not competitive league and cup games. I’m sure someone will comeback with a positive spin about #RoversRevival etc etc . For me all our investment should be in the first team if there’s money being spent on the Reserve team that doesn’t produce the goods. I’ll happy stand corrected if the case is otherwise.

I’m aware of at least one of them signing for Pollock Sat morning team this season because as I was informed ‘ the lad just wanted to play football’

I’m aware of at least one of them signing for Pollock Sat morning team this season because as I was informed ‘ the lad just wanted to play football’ This is what Graeme Liveston (Reserves Manager) sent me for a program against Forfar in late January early February on the reserves league “ After consideration, the club has decided that it will be more beneficial for its signed players not to be restricted to Under 20s fixtures on Friday evenings, but to arrange a series of Sunday/ midweek games at Reserves level between now and the end of the season instead. Such fixtures are presently being organised. To support the First Team, we now believe it is a priority that players who are, at present, unable to get important game time - players from the First Team bench or those returning from injury, and players too old for the SLDFL games who have used up their allowance of six over-age appearances - play regular matches. It would not be possible to commit to both types of fixture; use of the stadium pitch and also financial considerations would preclude this. Consequently, and with regret, Albion Rovers FC has withdrawn from the SLDFL League with immediate effect. Games against AfroScots Dreams, Vale of Clyde, Cambuslang Rangers, Larkhall Thistle and Dalbeattie Star are currently being arranged, with others to be added.”

If possible it'd be great if we could be given some advance notice of such matches so we can go along and watch.

I’m planning to do a better coverage of it on the club twitter but I’ll certainly say to the higher ups about fan attendance One thing I’ve wanted to do since joining the media team is bring a greater spotlight on the reserves as they are the future of the club imo

Another example of why the club needs fresh thinking at Boardroom level. I know the folk there try their best but I don’t see any point in having a reserve team if this is how it’s run.

I think a bit of background into the reserves might help people understand it better
Since taking charge of the Reserves, Graeme Liveston has provided 22 players to the First Team who have played a minimum of 5 games and a further 9 who have also played in First Team games (not just being on the bench); He has brought 4 of our current First team players to the club - Joe Bevan, Barry Duncan, Sean Fagan and Adam Fernie - a number of others who played regularly in League 2 (Jamie Leslie, Kyle Docherty, Lewis Wilson, etc), while this season’s Reserves group has provided No.2 goalkeeper Fraser Walker (18), Kai McMenemy (17), Cha Henderson (19) and Adam McArthur(18) for occasional appearances and the bench. There are also several young Reserves who are expected to make similar progress. There is not an appropriate league for these players to play in and games against ‘adult’ teams is more beneficial to the players and more relevant to the manager to make judgements regarding their development. This system - which is not an expensive undertaking - continues to bear fruit.

Beware of what you wish for.....`fresh thinking at Boardroom level`.........an apocalyptic change may be coming.....

I don’t know Graeme Liveston but have no desire to get personal but the club was in the position before in 2005 where an extensive youth system led to very limited fruition and cost the club a minor fortune. With the club being in the current position it finds itself everything should be open to question. How much does the current Reserve team cost the club? Would the money be better spent on the first team to help mount a promotion challenge. Certainly a Reserve team that plays non competitive games is a new one on me. Anyway the proof of the pudding etc etc.

Personally, I think we are lucky to have a coach of G Liveston’s calibre and experience in charge of our reserves, and if he reckons that the current set up is beneficial to both our fringe players and, in the longer term, the first team, that’s good enough for me.

I’ve heard a few folk say that Bill but with past experiences and particularly with the club at it’s lowest ebb I don’t think anything is beyond question at this moment in time. Time will tell. If I was a young player would I be looking to push my own personal standards by playing competitive games or would I be happy playing random friendlies?
