A higher level of strategy, initiative and analysis than that of Darren Young and Billy Stark (probably our greatest management team ever) is a bold prophecy. If this is what David can offer, at a cost that the club considers affordable and worthwhile, then he can consider himself very welcome at ARFC!
I like the personal touch too, but remember vividly John Devlin's infrequent posts on the Rovers excoboard.
But on the whole, while I am not necessarily against the Director of Football model (after Paul Martin left I always wanted him to stay on in such a role perhaps in an informal capacity) I'm of the mind that right now the team on the pitch ain't broke, in fact it's better than ever, so why fix it?

Just getting in before the big hitters arrive..... It's quite straightforward really. In today's modern sports environment it's not about taking one game at a time and trying to keep the club solvent and a winning (periodically at least) team on the park. No siree, instead it's all about:
Leading through the mission and values; Establishing the forward vision and strategic direction Building external stakeholder value and goodwill: Developing sustainable strategies for the short, medium and long term towards our goal of global football domination by 2020 at the latest; Communicating with impact; Having outstanding business acumen; Influencing others; developing strategic relationships with global and interstellar galactic partners; Driving for results; Building organisational talent.
I know that's really an over-simplification as a blueprint for a DoF, but hey it's just gone 9am on a Sunday. Given too that we seem to have developed a passion for quoting some of the world's finest minds on the forum of late I thought it apt to remind myself of the great words of one of the foremost Scottish philosophers of the modern era, James Krankie esq. I'm sure that everything will just be "fandabbydozy". I feel much better now.

I can understand the bemusement at this appointment but I think we owe it to David to see what benefits he can bring to the Club.
If it's costing the club nothing financially I don't really see a problem.
I think it's also to his credit that he has come on hear and voluntarily tried to explain what the roll entails.
We can't criticise a lack of information coming from the Club one minute and then be critical of someone trying to explain a new role he has undertaken.
Personally I think our revolving door of directors over the last few years has been more baffling.

David should be given time to show what he can bring to Rovers. Only then should he be judged.

I don't disagree Tommy and your points are well made. Just to clarify its not "bemusement" with me it's where is the proper, rigorous governance around all of this?
If someone wants to come on here and sell a grand vision, properly, with dates, timescales, plans, finance etc then hell I'm buying. Coming on and giving us some fairly unintelligible (with the greatest of respect) management babble-speak (a bit rich from someone who uses 'governance' in a thread, but no matter) then not so much.
It might not be costing us anything at the moment but we have another wee windfall coming our way in January and I don't want to see it getting squandered on any individual's vanity project, fantasy or whim.

Good point D7 about the Celtic money. It really is critical that this money is used wisely and with great prudence.
I think we all have to sit back once in a while and look at where Rovers are just now and the size of the Club, fan base etc.
I have always stated that to me Rovers are a bottom tier team when you look at our finances, size of support, stadium etc so for me we have been exceeding out expectations over the last 5 years or so.
My realistic view/ambition of Rovers would for them to survive in our current division and to become financially more stable.I would be happy with that.
Nothing wrong with those who view more lofty ambitions for the Club but I don't see it as a realistic proposition.
I don't see it happening but until Rovers get a stadium that can be utilised more than once a fortnight financial hardship will continue to be our lot.
The point about Social Media is valid and it would be lovely to publicise as much as possible our £5.00 entry for East Fife.
It's worth remembering that there are a million and one vital roles at the club that are carried out by a hardy bunch of volunteers who deserve nothing but respect.

Unnecessary appointment.
Think the public relations \ media side needs a good look at itself.
Website - never updated. No reaction to performances or nothing.
Facebook page - useless. Never even advertises the next fixture. May I also add that over 4000 people like the trust page on fb.
No interviews with players\managers etc...
No highlights of games.
This wee forum seems to be the only way to keep up to date with the club ( even that's debateable)
Don't need a dof, I think we need a bigger push on the pr side as the communication aspect is abysmal.

Being realistic the Rovers aren't going to be the savours of Scottish football. Not today anyway. What we need is a Rovers shaped plan and a Rovers shaped solution. And then we can take it from there.
Our new DoF must be reading this with his head in his hands but we need what is best for the club and the immediate future of the club. As a first step. We'll still be here needing a team to support in the years ahead and long after the present custodians have decided enough is enough. The immediate priority is to ensure that.

Oooerrr. I hope you're joking. I need to go and lie down for a bit. Sounds like the vacuous platitudinous jargon from some of the senior management desk jockeys where I work.

Alex - the vast majority of the work at ARFC is done by volunteers. Money is not their motivation. Do you have any ideas/can you help on the internet/PR side?? Can you write any match reports? Can you offer to interview a few players? Can you offer to update the Facebook page?

I attended a trust meeting a while back and brought this subject up. At the meeting, a person who dealt with media and websites attended (I can't remember his name off the top of my head) was going to assist in the social media side. Since then we haven't seen him. Facebook pages were going to get amalgamated into one official page.. This never happened.... Joseph James (who left to pursue a career elsewhere) done interviews with Ronnie Boyd and others ( only a few but it was good to hear their opinions) Would be interesting to know who deals with public relations these days. Someone (who I don't want to name) offered to help with the pr side but was refused. d7 does a superb summary of the game....you've praised him many times. Just a suggestion but why not use his summary's and post it on the social media sites or the actual website. I'm sure he wouldn't mind

Anyone want the lottery numbers for a random Saturday, 8 months hence?!?!!?!?

Cheers Tee. I work in a place that is big on all this stuff. It drains my soul. So whilst I wish the initiative well and hope it is supported positively, wild horses on illegal stimulants couldn't drag me there.
