Whats everyones thoughts on the game?
Am i right in saying that Albion get 2 (rather than 3) points for winning the shootout?
Feel the 2-1 lead flattered Albion at half time. We were really struggling to cope with the Stranraer high press and were giving away far too many balls. Feels like we needed to hold onto the ball a little longer, look after it, RELAX! but we were going back to front too soon and it left the front 3 isolated up front.
The fact we were going back to front quickly also left too much space between the lines for Stranraer to pass and move. I did feel like they were more progressive in attack and were looking to thread through balls and combination play more.
THAT SAID, we had good combinations down the left hand side and looked a threat on the break. Really impressed with Joe Moore's contribution in getting close to the byline and playing those well timed cutbacks for Jamieson and Fotheringham to attack for the goals.
2nd half far more even in terms of possession although Stranraer won the half. Albion didnt quite have the craft in the final third to make the chances.
POTM from an Albion perspective..... Goodfellow pulled off some top saves to keep Albion in the game, top performance. Moore.... the main source of threat down the left with good movement and playing the right pass. Aitken did the most he could to put himself about and bring others into play.
Good game to watch again I thought.

Watching a penalty shoot out on the sky results app is exhausting !! Well done Vers.

Great 2 points. The very young team held their nerve in the never ending penalty shoot out.
Now to jump into the car simulator for the 'journey' home!!

A decent effort on the night and much enjoyed watching the second half with a 12-y-o Aberlour rather than standing at a cold and wet Stair Park and facing a 2 hour journey home. I suspect we will get a bit of press coverage owing to the manner of gaining the extra point (have we set a record?)

I believe it was Matty Aitken who provided both cut backs, certainly the second one was Matt. Can’t remember the first one but I thought that was Aitken as well? 🤔

Took us an age to get going thought it was going to be a long night. Maybe not the greatest of games but we did hang in there. We conceded a really poor goal from a corner- still think ab experienced centre half would help the youngsters . Brilliant penalties from both sides.
Interesting the Stranraer commentators let us know that Paul Cairney isn’t match fit. Don’t know if that is not match fit in terms of injured or just not fit?

Most of the play was definitely focused through the left side.

Thought Goodie was the man of the match for the series of early saves where we seemed to struggle to get to grips with the game. Somewhat ironic since he then faced 14 penalties!! Though with the new encroachment rules it makes it far harder for gks.
As game progressed I felt we looked more than a match for them and we had a couple of good chances in last few minutes and I certainly thought we had a good penalty shout.
Looking forward to Stenny game on Saturday

Bottom line, inexperienced team or not, (as was pointed out several times last night) is that Stranraer, full of experience as the commentators pointed out, could not beat us. And we won. Lots still to be done, but quite promising, and a team of battlers all night.

We are crying out for experience when the inevitable tough times of the season come.

Was really impressed with the team last night. After the first half hours I was dreading the season a bit as it looked like we might just lacking the ability to compete.
But once we settled in I thought we coped reasonably well with a really experienced and canny team. We were lacking a bit in the centre of midfield with only one natural midfielder in Fozzy, i think all going well Lynas and eventually Cairney will be in there with him.
We did look really good going forward down the wings when we did attack, Burke looked raw but really talented, Skeoch also looked a threat on the other wing.
Matty Aitken again a stand out, really determined work for the first goal and some lovely skill in the run in the set up to the second.
Still a bit of work to happen defensively I think, hopefully Lewis coming back in will help in terms of a vocal leader back there.
All in pretty happy with how things are shaping up, hopefully we can maybe get a couple of more bodies in over the season to fill any gaps etc.
Theres an article up saying Cairney got an ankle knock in training which has put back his recovery to match fitness. -https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/local-sport/albion-rovers-blow-ex-hibs-22839576

POTM from an Albion perspective..... Rovers supporters tend to refer to the team as Rovers. Rovers and Stranraer both get a point for the draw, Rovers get another point for winning the penalty shoot out. Does make working out who will win the group a little harder, dare I say exciting, well interesting anyway. Betfred usually is the start of the season with all the teams starting at the same time. The top league teams have been going for a while, so in theory should have been ready to squash the lower league sides which makes the Hamilton result at Annan all the more remarkable. Would be nice to mess up Accies chances of qualifying. Couple of good competitive games for getting the players fit and the team playing as a unit. Agree that keeping the ball longer might be an idea, not against a big boot forward, but not all the time. Young group, look like a set of grafters, what more can you ask for? My son reckons we will score a lot of goals, lose a lot of goals, just so long as we avoid the dreaded last spot. With the advent of streaming, and as an exile, really looking forward to the season ahead.

It seems to me like the Rovers players dont seem to trust their team mates to make the pass and move off the ball. Stranraer did more of this than Rovers.
I like the direct ball into space, but i think RIGHT NOW, Rovers are caught between trying to sit deep and compact and exploit the long balls, either in behind or up to aitken to hold up and bring others into play, and playing a fast, direct game with a higher press.
I felt like at times, Rovers were trying to press high vs Stranraer and it just meant the ball went back to front too quickly, and with the midfield pushed further up there was too much room to let Stranraer in at the back 4.
I feel with the PACE in the team, Rovers best tactic would be a compact deep block and look to spring the direct ball into Aitken from there. If he attracts a marker they can always put the ball in behind for a willing runner.
