The closest station is Haymarket or Waverly both about 3 miles away the ground is nowhere near anything not even a pub. £10 in a taxi or 20 mins on the number 27 bus

Apparently the Speirs Bar is the nearest although about a mile away! Probably a trip where we drink in Coatbridge and go straight to the ground afterwards. Great set of fixtures though-looking forward to the new season already 😁😁

It would be interesting is some historian can uncover when we last faced Edinburgh City in a competitive league match. My guess would be about 1935 if they are the ancestors of that Edinburgh City who shipped goals for fun.

Edinburgh not new territory for Rovers. Certainly used to play Leith Athletic regularly and also St Bernards back in the day.
Meadowbank Thistle also an old foe of Rovers. Pretty sure Rovers played and defeated Meadowbank Thistle in Edinburgh in what I think was Meadowbanks first ever league game.
Need someone as old as Grant or Tee to confirm all of the above.
Edinburgh City also have vibrant Social Club but I don't thinks its near their ground.

Yes, Rovers beat Meadowbank Thistle in their first ever league match - 1.0 at Meadowbank Stadium - Peter Dickson was the scorer. IIRC MT should hve won - missed a barrowload of chances

I was at that game too, Grant! You're right, they missed loads of chances. it was our first game in that season, on a Friday evening! I was in Musselburgh staying with my grandmother, arrived after the kick off, to see a team playing in yellow playing a team in white..... for a while, I thought it was The Rovers who were in yellow! Fancy me not recognizing the big, lumbering Dunky Shields! Partly because the players seemed so far away in such a big stadium. Our goal was a long time a coming, in the second half. Our new manager, John Brogan, was in that game too.

Friday night, indeed, Alasdair - think the crowd was about 1100 - Tommy Fagan who helped orchestrate MT getting into the league (they were actually Ferranti Thistle but had to change the name) said they would bring `big` crowds to the Scottish league - never happened.

Crowd was 4000: Meadowbank's record gate.

It would be interesting is some historian can uncover when we last faced Edinburgh City in a competitive league match. My guess would be about 1935 if they are the ancestors of that Edinburgh City who shipped goals for fun. I recently obtained a number of booklets on past members of the Scottish Football League, one of which deals with the original Edinburgh City, founded in 1928 & disbanded in 1955. They joined the Scottish League in 1931 and as you say, Charles, they shipped goals for fun.... there was only 1 out of 8 seasons pre-war when they let in less than 100 goals! According to Mr N Nicol, the "Lillywhites", as they were known, last played us (ie Rovers) at their East Pilton Park ground on 26 March 1938, when we won 2-0. Earlier that season, 1937-38, Rovers won 5-3 in what must have been an entertaining match at Cliftonhill on 13 November 1937. Rovers again gained promotion to Division 1 that season, having previously played 3 seasons there in 1934-5 to 1936-7. Although City played after the war for 3 seasons in Division C & as a junior team, we don't appear to have met them again, in any Cup competition. So history will be remade in the Pilton district of Edinburgh when we face them on August 4th.
