I spent the majority of my Sunday reflecting on Saturday's events and would like to offer my thoughts on where we are now and where we could go from here.
The game itself was a complete non-event and an utter embarrassment. Defeated (comfortably) at home to a mediocre Highland League outfit. Outplayed, outclassed, and outmanoeuvred for the entire 90 minutes.
Clueless from back to front the highlight, from a Rovers point of view, was the performance of the much maligned Daniel Potts who produced a string of first-class saves.
I respect Brogan for walking away and part of me wonders if even he was shocked when the BoD unanimously backed him at Thursday's ARFC Trust meeting. The last straw for him and, probably, the low-point of his career. I, genuinely, wish him well for the future despite his record with us.
In my mind the BoD - and the "committee" that appointed JB - are at fault. I believe wholeheartedly that his appointment was purely nostalgic and did not take into account the needs or ambitions of the club. The fact that he wasn't qualified to take up the role says it all really - that should have been made clear at interview stage and, if his CV was reviewed at the sift stage, should have been picked up before he even faced the committee to pitch his pipe dream. The Board are, in short, culpable and our dire start to the season falls squarely at their feet. No excuses.
My main concern is that applications for the vacancy close on Friday so, presumably, the very same people who appointed JB will be deciding who will be chosen to pick up the pieces following his departure. Can we really trust them to make the right decision? I hope so but, honestly, wouldn't allow any of them to order my Chinese on a Saturday night. Incompetence? Well, that's alarming. Ignorance? Excusable, but frustrating. Delusion? Downright dangerous.
They had the conviction on Thursday night to face the fans and say "Yes, Brogan is the right man!" "He's an idea fit for the football club" "It is what it is and I believe he can turn this around!" It would appear that even JB himself didn't believe this which ultimately led to his departure. Truly startling on so many levels.
I could go on, but wouldn't want to cover lots of things that have been mentioned elsewhere on the MB. It's now over to the BoD to make the right decision. 136 years of history is it stake. Don't let our club die.
