I remeber being in attendace at a game in Broomfield that season in which we won a penatly shoot out after the game ended in a draw. I think this was the final against Motherwell but we played at Broomfield as it was a neutral ground. Alec Mcnight the golakeeper on loan from Celtic made a few first team appearances for them after his loan and if my memory serves me correctly he saved a couple of pens that night? Just want to to check am I correct here or was this game the semi final? Thanks Fergie

I don't remember but the goalkeeper in question was Allen McKnight who most Rovers fans, me included didn't rate highly. He went back to Celtic and played 12 games for them and 10 for NI. A man of many clubs as they say, check out his record here if you wish.

Fergie seems to be mixing up two different Lanarkshire Cup wins.
In August 1981, it was a 4 team tournament at Broomfield. We beat Accies 3-1 in the semi final on the Saturday and Motherwell in the final on the Sunday 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw (aet). The Rovers keeper was John Balavage, who saved 3 of ‘Well’s 5 penalties.
In 1986/87, it was back to semi-finals and a final played during the season. We beat Motherwell 4-2 in August ‘86; the match was played at Broomfield (not sure why) and the final was against Airdrie at Broomfield on 20 April 1987 (a Monday evening). We won 2-1 with goals from Jim Chapman and Paul Teevan. Allen McKnight was the keeper in that match and didn’t save (or even face) a penalty, but a report in the programme says he made a magnificent last minute save.

Yes your right Rab, thanks for the info and confirming what happened and your right, I mixed them both up, it was the 86-87 one I attended as started going to rovers games in 83 with my late Dad I was only 11 at the time and a very long time ago but I think it was the final I was at and not the semi as I rember everyone celebrating wildy leaving the stadium and a few of us getting chased out by airdie fans when leaving the stadium . I don't know what made me think it was penalties right enough lol
