The referee decided the match could not continue at half-time
A pre-season friendly match between Broxburn Athletic and Edinburgh City was abandoned last night due to crowd trouble. Police were called to the disturbance at Albyn Park in West Lothian and the match was not allowed to continue beyond half-time.
Broxburn gained promotion from the East of Scotland League to the Lowland League last season and hosted League Two Edinburgh City as part of their summer preparations for the 2024/25 campaign. The two teams were tied at 0-0 at the interval, however the evening ended early due to concerns over safety.
Witnesses claim a group of youths following City entered an area of the ground full of locals after setting off pyrotechnics. Police arrived at the ground to restore order as fans fled amid the clashes. After discussions with police, the match officials decided to call the game off despite appeals for calm. It is not clear at this point whether the game will be rescheduled for another date.
