The voting for the Albion Rovers Supporters Player of the Year 2016/17 and ‘Chic Young’ Goal of the Season Awards is now up and running. All of the players currently at the club are eligible for the Player of the Year Award; you just need to tell us your top three personal contenders.
The ‘Chic Young’ Goal of the Season trophy was donated by Gina Young as a memorial to her late husband Thomas, who for many years was an integral part of the club. In his time Chic fulfilled several roles, both official and unofficial, with Rovers but above all was a life-long fan, and is sorely missed here at Cliftonhill.
Here is a brief reminder of some of the contenders:
Mark Ferry v Airdrie (A), September 2016 – A crisp low shot from twenty-yards out finds the bottom corner of the net with the keeper helpless.
Ryan Wallace v Queen’s Park (H), October 2016 – A breakaway allows Ryan to slot past the goalkeeper from outside the box in the last minute to seal victory.
Calum Ferguson v Queen of the South (H), November 2016 – Do we really need to describe this? A last-gasp strike from close range to set up a Scottish Cup meeting with Celtic.
Ross C Stewart [Second Goal] v Brechin City (A), December 2016 – A well-crafted team move that culminates with Ross producing a composed first-time finish to slip the ball home past the on-rushing keeper.
Ross C Stewart [First Goal] v Stenhousemuir (A), March 2017 – A run down the left-wing from near the halfway line ending with a placed finish into the far corner from a tight angle.
Ryan Wallace v East Fife (H), March 2017 – An instinctive rasping drive from outside the box that flew past the unsuspecting keeper and into the far corner via the post.
Ross M Stewart v East Fife (H), March 2017 – Why should the keeper be excluded? A last-minute save from a thunderbolt of a penalty to prevent two late dropped points; potentially pivotal in how the season pans out.
Ryan Wallace v Queen’s Park (H), April 2017 – An expertly controlled shot, with his non favoured foot from twenty five yards that rocketed into the top corner that no goalkeeper would have saved.
It must be stressed that each and every goal scored this season by a Rovers player currently at the club is eligible for the award, and you can vote for whichever of those that you wish. You can register your votes for both awards by picking up a slip from the club shop or by sending an email to vote@albionrovers.com. The deadline is midnight on 29 April, and the results will be announced in due course towards the end of the season. May the best player/strike/save win!
