My old man and my uncle often speak about a fund that was in place to redevelop cliftonhill stadium.Maybe around late 60s early 70s an artists impression was toured around pubs in coatbridge and stadium on matchdays and folk made donations.
Any our older fans remember such event or even better where is the artists impression??
Im aware that 60s 70s was a time of trying new substances shall we say,so if this is myth il be asking a few questions.

I remember that as well, Sharkey.......but to call it `fraud` is a bit strong considering this is around 50 years ago and all those involved are long gone. At that time Rovers had a `Development Fund` with a weekly sweepstake run from first, an office in Bank Street (opposite Sharks Gub) then later in Sunnyside Road opposite Pettigrews newsagent. Sorry but no idea where you could find the artists impression...maybe the advertiser records, I know they used to keep these on file in the refernce section of Airdrie Library when I did some research work into Rovers history in the early 1970s

The "fraud" part was tongue n cheek and not meant as any sort of disrespect to anyone involved. Just wondering what happened to the funds seen as stadium design didnt happen. Would be good to see a photo of it so i might dig into it and see if i can find any photos.

A substantial slug of money was spent on the cover on the currently unused terracing after the previous cover was destroyed in the Great Storm of 1967 (?). Floodlighting too was put in (again not the current set up)

My god is that how old that roof is lol.
I remember after winning the title under davie provan we played a couple of home matches at broomfield as work was being done at cliftonhill.Any idea what work was done? If my memory serves me right new crush barriers were added in the far side terrace? Was this also when the current extension was added to main stand roof?

The structural steelwork is fine but the sheeting was brittle and easily broken by folks outside lobbing bricks on it. I`m not sure about new crush barriers being put in . Apparently the terracing steps are too shallow and narrow to meet current stadium legislation. The extension to the main stand roof came years after the terracing cover and yes, probably around the time of our season in Div 1 under DP. That and installing the steps / barriers up to the pitch level at the Airdrie end of the stand.

Yes the works carried out in 1990 included re-concreting the terracing at the North Terracing with new crush barriers. Also new turnstiles were built at this end ( the turnstiles themselves were recycled from Muirton Park as St Johnstone built their new stadium at McDermaud). New toilet block was also built at this end of the ground.

My dad who was heavily involved in the old supporters club used to take me down into the office, just along from Gibsons, (yes opposite the pub), would end up spending a couple of hours listening to the stories of Arthur Messenger, 'Fister' Harkness, David Little, et al. To find out what your numbers were you had to tear the perforated strip around the ticket which would reveal the winning or more often than not the losing numbers. Have to admit I can't ever remember seeing a picture of what a developed ground would have been like, in those days the Stockcar racing and then Speedway hadn't got a chance to waste what I will always remember as a picturesque ground that didn't really need developing

Aye Sam, stock cars and speedway have a lot to answer for. Names to conjour with Sam...I (sadly) remember the day Arthur Messenger suffered his stroke in the wee office in Sunnyside road (after the move from Bank street). I had come down to pick up something for my mum on the way home from school and helped Jimmy Gavin get him in to Jimmy`s car to get him to a doctor - that was in the days before Monklands Hospital.
